"This Mill Type Steam Engine In 1969 Is Still Doing A Good Days Work In The Establishment Of The Grane Manufacturing Companies Longshoot Mill In Haslingden, Lancashire, England. It Is Rated At 500 Ihp. It Is A Cross Compound Cylinder Arrangement, With 15" And 30" Cylinders And 48" Stroke. Its Flywheel Is 16 Feet In Diameter, Grooves For 15 Ropes And Rotates At 75 Rpm. It Is Equipped On Both Cylinders With The Famous Corliss Valve Arrangement And Its Liberating Gear. It Was Built In 1906 By The Firm Of S.S. Stott & Co Engineers, Which Is Only About Two Blocks Away From Where The Engine Was Originally Set Up In 1907, And Is Presently Supplying Power To 907 Weaving Looms. This Engine Is One Of Only A Few Left In The Lancashire And Yorkshire Textile And Again This Area Was Only One Of The Many Areas With The Same Type Of Reliable Power In The Era When Britain'S Bread Hung By A Lancashire Thread." This was the first bridge across the creek. A man named "Daddy" Cooper lived at the mouth of the creek. He used to cut wood for the stern wheeler that plied the river from Prince Albert to Battleford, Saskatchewan. |
